Jonah 1:15,16We noted last week that Jonah's disobedience caused the storm that threatened to break the ship in two. This storm was so fierce that even the captain realised that only a supreme being can save them from this situation. Many people have lost hope in the institutions of man and are turning to spiritual leaders in the anticipation that one of the gods will get them through the storms that they are facing. Are those of us who know Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord telling them of His sacrifice and love for them that they do not have to face the storms of life alone?
Are we blaming the devil as the cause of the storms around us when we are the real cause? While the devil may be the perpetrator of the wickedness and lawlessness around us, we have also been disobedient in that we have not obeyed the call of our God to go and share the gospel of Jesus Christ as well as disobeying Him in other areas. We have unwittingly brought the situation upon ourselves and then we ask Jesus to protect us from it. We look on the unbeliever who cannot fight off the devil because he has no spiritual weapons and shake our heads in pity. We even go so far to say that it is because of his rejection of Jesus that he is in the situation. We never see that we have contributed to the unbeliever's problem by our disobedience.
Jonah said, without a doubt in his heart, that the sea will cease raging if he was thrown overboard. When he was thrown overboard, the sea calmed and the unbelieving sailors feared the God of Jonah, offered a sacrifice to Him and took vows to follow Him from that time. When the distressed unbeliever sees us, is our lifestyle demonstrating that while the storms are around us, we have a peace that passes understanding? Will they be drawn to Jesus who died for them and rose again from the dead for them ? Will they want to know the Prince of Peace because of our lifestyle and testimony? We need to be witnesses of Him so that others will fear Him and come to know Him as their personal Saviour and Lord. May we begin to obey Him and see the devil pushed back and the storms begin to cease.

Jonah 1:5-6Are we, those of us who know Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord, sleeping while our nation and community are being destroyed by the devil? We will note that the sailors, who were not novices, cried out to their gods in the event that they will hear them and save them from the storm. The storm was very strong and seriously challenged their ability as seamen. They found out that their gods could not save them. Likewise in our environment, things are getting very dangerous and we are sleeping for all intents and purposes. We ask God to protect us from the storm and go about our business putting our faith in Him and His promises. But like Jonah, He has given us a command. Go and warn the unbelieving people around us.
We must admit that the world is a more dangerous place to live in today. Despite the terrible events happening , the church is fast asleep. The unbeliever is looking for something/someone to hold on to that will save him. If the church keeps sleeping, things will get worse which may be the wake up call that will propel the church into action. But what will the church be doing then? Will it be looking to save itself or will it be willing to sacrifice itself so that the storms that are swirling around, will cease?
God's command to us is to warn the unbeliever so that he may turn to the only saviour of mankind- Jesus Christ. We need to heed that command as we may well be judged in the storms around us. We have no doubt been hearing about believers who have not even begun to fulfil the call of God upon their lives, dying before their time. They died before their time, some of them through the storms that have resulted because of their inaction. Let us today heed His call to warn others as they are crying out for help. We have the answer. His name is Jesus.

Mark 13:5-6Jesus is warning us today that we do not allow any man to deceive us. So many times we are taken with the ministry of men that we forget that it is Holy Spirit that is working in them to bring the mighty revelations and do the mighty works that we see. Too many times we glory in knowing them personally rather than glory in the God who is the source of all the mighty demonstrations that we witness. We will make special efforts to be in their meetings, get their latest books and watch their television programmes rather than making the effort to know directly what God is saying to us, that we may fulfil His call on our lives and finish the work He has called us to do. If we fail to fulfil all that God has called us to accomplish, we will have allowed men to deceive us.
Each one of us has a call of God upon our lives and while we serve in a church and support its vision, we need to know what God is saying to us in the fulfilment of that call. We cannot afford to put aside what God has called us to do and run with the instructions of someone else. We need to hear God and do what He has called us to do which will not be in contradiction to the vision He has placed us in as the vision is being guided by Holy Spirit. I firmly believe that some of the greatest manifestations of God's miraculous power does not have to come from the leaders of the church as Holy Spirit using us in this manner has nothing to do with leading the church. There are others who are gifted to lead the church.
There are those who will come with strange doctrines which have no scriptural basis and deceive those who worship them more than God. Jesus has already warned us that they will come saying that they are Christ. They will do signs and wonders too as no one will follow them if they do not demonstrate some miracles. We need today to know the true and living God so that we will not be deceived. We need to be grounded in His word that we will not be deceived by wrong doctrines and incorrect interpretations. We are warned that many will be deceived so we need to take heed that we are not among them. Let us test the spirits and not be fooled by those who will say to us that this is the new way. God is revealing Himself in new ways but there is only one way and that is Jesus Christ. Let us take heed!

2 Corinthians 11:3How simple the gospel of Jesus Christ is and there are so many disputes over it. Some believe only part of the truth about what is written about Jesus while others dispute what is written. Why has this happened? We have allowed the devil to deceive us. We walk by faith and not by sight and we try to use natural means to understand God. When we choose to operate by sight, we are operating in the devil's territory and he is very clever in the questions that he will send towards our mind.
While it is not sinful to have questions if we do not understand something, if we try to understand everything with the natural mind until we are convinced without a doubt, we may very well be opening up ourselves to deception by the devil. The devil will make us ask more questions which is what he did with Eve. The more questions he asked the more her faith wavered as she was using her natural faculties to decide on a spiritual matter. When we exercise faith in God and His word, we may search the scriptures to know more about Him and Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth. He will prevent doubts from taking over our minds by opening our understanding so that we will discern spiritually what the natural mind will not understand. Once this enlightenment comes, it is taken in by our souls and we receive peace about it. It brings life and joy to us as we now meditate on it.
God has kept the message and work of salvation very simple. Repent and be baptised every one of you in the Name of Jesus for the forgiveness of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. So many people stumble at this call to be saved. As we grow in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, we are confronted by various theologies and teaching which seem contradictory. Can we exercise simple faith in God and His word and see His power move through us as He ministers to others through us? We will surely then be mighty people of power.
